Protests and severe flooding have caused widespread disruption.
In recent months, Bangladesh has faced a dual crisis of widespread protests and severe flooding, creating a challenging situation for the country. The protests, primarily sparked by economic issues, political discontent, and demands for greater rights, have drawn large crowds in major cities. People are frustrated with rising inflation, unemployment, and what they perceive as government mismanagement. These protests have sometimes turned violent, leading to clashes with police and disruptions in daily life.
There have also been troubling reports of attacks on the country’s religious minorities. Most of these attacks have been on Hindus: their temples, businesses, homes and persons. But the attacks have also been on Christians. Our partner has reported the destruction of at least one church, and we know of vandalism upon others.
At the same time, Bangladesh has been hit hard by severe flooding, which has affected millions of people across the country. This flooding is a result of the annual monsoon season, which has been particularly intense this year. Rivers have overflowed, inundating vast areas of farmland, destroying homes, and displacing families.
Our partners in Bangladesh lead discipleship groups for young people across the country, raising up the next generation of Christian leaders for the church in Bangladesh. Members of two of these discipleship groups have been severely affected by flooding. Due to the disruption to various means of communication, our partners are finding it difficult to ascertain their status.
We would urge you to pray for Bangladesh at this critical time.
