New life after a long winter.
It’s known as the land of eternal blue sky, with the long winter months characterised not so much by rain and snow as by a protracted spell of crisp, cold air. Nothing grows in the hard ground, and there is little nourishment to be found for wild animals and the nomadic people’s herds of livestock. This bleak picture characterises the spiritual state of Mongolia throughout much of the 20th century. The ground was hard, and the people were spiritually starved.
But after the winter comes the spring. That first sensation of warm sun on the skin signals an end to the months–long battle of endurance, and green shoots begin to emerge. So it was with the democratic revolution of 1990 as a new wave of life swept across the nation. Missionaries arrived, eager to share the good news of Christ. While some employed misguided strategies in their zeal to reach a culture they did not yet understand, others laid solid foundations and were blessed to see a strong and healthy church emerge. The bread of heaven was proclaimed and many began to find satisfaction after a decades–long “winter” of spiritual hunger.
Today, Buddhism remains the dominant faith and animistic practices abound. In high places, prayer flags and piles of stones mark sites used by some to worship spirits and the creation. Moreover, if somebody falls ill, he will turn not to the Lord for comfort or healing but to a witch doctor who will offer to transfer the sickness to an enemy (for a price, of course).
However, throughout our 25 years of partnership with local believers we have been blessed to see God working in great ways. He has built His church, turned lives around, sent His people into broken situations and allowed His light to shine through our brothers and sisters. Today, the work continues and green shoots continue to emerge and grow, but with each of the country’s native people groups still considered unreached there is much work to be done.
Our vision is for a local church who are equipped to grow, flourish and reach out to every town and village within Mongolia. In a country where many are yet to hear the name of Jesus, we continue to send workers and resource the local church as we pray, ‘Your Kingdom come’.
